Study Notes - Mathematics

Today, in Mathematics we are making study notes of Number for our topic test on Friday. Now, I go to Mathematics site and we are talking about Number, Order of Operation, Rounding, Standard Form, Percentage "of mean times", Percentage increase/decrease,

Number

  • Multiples - Multiples are set of numbers that correspond to a base number that has been mulitplied by other numbers. A Multiple is formed by multiplying a given number by the counting numbers.

Multiples: 3, 6, 9, 12...

  • Factor - Factor is a number or algebraic expression that divides another number or expression evenly. Factors are the numbers you mulitply together to get a product.

Factor: 15 - 1, 3, 5, 15

  • Prime Number - A Prime Number are numbers that have only 2 factors. A Prime Number is a number that can only be divided evenly (no remainders) by itself and the number 1.
  • HCF (Highest Common Factor) - Highest Common Factor is found by finding all common factors of two numbers and selecting the largest one.

Highest Common Factor is 4.

8: 1, 2, 4, 8

12: 1, 2, 4, 6, 12

  • LCM (Lowest Common Factor) - Lowest Common Factor is a multiple number you get when you multiply a number by a whole number.

Lowest Common Factor is 24

6: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 ...

8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40 ...

Order of Operation

Here is what we did to solve problems and it's called BEDMAS:

  • B - stands for brackets.
  • E - stands for exponents.
  • D - stands for division.
  • M - stands for multiplication.
  • A - stands for addition.
  • S - stands for subtraction.

Rounding

Rounding means replacing a number with an approximate value that has a shorter, simpler, or more explicit representation.

 Example:
Replacing $23.4476 with $23.45, the fraction 312/937 with 1/3 or the expression √2 with 1.414.

Number

Standard Form

Standard form allows us to write numbers without using as many digits. A number is standard form is written in two parts: Number from 1 to 9 x power of 10

Example:
35 946 (first number must be from 1 - 9)
followed by power of 10
Answer: 3.5946 x 10 power of 4

Percentage (of mean times)

In mathematics, a percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100.

3/5 of 400 = 240

10% of 600 = 60

Increase/Decrease:
To Increase/Decrease an amount by a percentage, first calculate the percentage of the amount and then either add this answer on to increase the quantity, or subtract this answer to decrease the quantity.

Example:

Question

Working

Answer

Increase 60 by 10%

Decrease 200 by 5%

60 + 10% * 60

200 - 5% * 200

Smart Goal

 "SMART GOAL"

For me, the meaning of SMART GOAL are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time. It is important to us students to learn the Smart Goal so that we can help our parents and achieve our dreams in the right time. Smart Goal set us up for success by mkaing it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time. The Smart method helps us to push further and gives us a sense of direction and helps us organize and to reach our goals.

What are SMART GOAL Example?

Smart Goal have different examples:

S = Specific

Specific is a clear and specific as possible with what you want to achieve. The more narrow your goal, the more you’ll understand the steps necessary to achieve it.

Example: “I want to earn a position managing a development team for a startup tech company.”

M = Measurable

Measurable is what evidence will prove you’re making progress toward your goal? For example, if your goal is to earn a position managing a development team for a startup tech company, you might measure progress by the number of management positions you’ve applied for and the number of interviews you’ve completed. Setting milestones along the way will give you the opportunity to re-evaluate and course-correct as needed. When you achieve your milestones, remember to reward yourself in small but meaningful ways.

Example: “I will apply to three open positions for the manager of a development team at a tech startup.”

A = Achievable

Achievable have you set an achievable goal? Setting goals you can reasonably accomplish within a certain time-frame will help keep you motivated and focused. Using the above example of earning a job managing a development team, you should know the credentials, experience and skills necessary to earn a leadership position. Before you begin working toward a goal, decide whether it’s something you can achieve now or whether there are additional preliminary steps you should take to become better prepared.

Example: “I will update my resume with relevant qualifications, so I can apply to three open positions for the manager of a development team at a tech startup.”

R = Realistic

Relevant is when setting goals for yourself, consider whether or not they are relevant. Each of your goals should align with your values and larger, long-term goals. If a goal doesn’t contribute toward your broader objectives, you might rethink it. Ask yourself why the goal is important to you, how achieving it will help you and how it will contribute toward your long-term goals.

Example: “To achieve my goal of being in leadership, I will update my resume with relevant qualifications so I can apply to three open positions for the manager of a development team at a tech startup.”

T = Time

Time-based is what your goal time-frame? An end-date can help provide motivation and help you prioritize. For example, if your goal is to earn a promotion to a more senior position, you might give yourself six months. If you haven’t achieved your goal in that time-frame, take time to consider why. Your time-frame might have been unrealistic, you might have run into unexpected roadblocks or your goal might have been unachievable.

Example: “To achieve my goal of being in leadership, I will update my resume with relevant qualifications so I can apply to three open positions for the manager of a development team at a tech startup this week.”

Waitangi Day

 "Waitangi Day"

Waitangi Day was signed on 6th of February 1840 when it was Waitangi Day. William Hobson was signed the Waitangi Day and the points of view are an opinions or ideas that people believe in. There are 3 different Points of View on the Waitangi Day and they are A Day of Shame, Waitangi Day is a great to remember because they want a peaceful place and the last one A Day of School and Work

They have their Point Of View are a story that can be told from the first person, second person or third person of point of view (POV). Writers use POV to express the personal emotions of either themselves or their characters. The POV of a story is how the writer wants to convey the experience to the reader.

In my perpspective on wether it is important to celebrate Waitangi Day or not for me it is still important to celebrate Waitangi Day because Waitangi Day is the national day of New Zealand, marking the anniversary of the initial signing which is on the 6th of February 1840 of the Treaty of Waitangi, which is regarded as the founding document of the nation.

It is important to learn about the Treaty because we can learn more about Waitangi Day. The Principles of the Treaty are referred to in several Acts of Parliament. It is an important part of New Zealand education system and it can also show how actually New Zealand works. The Treaty governs the relationship between Maori, the indigenous people and everyone else and ensures the rights of both Maori and non-Maori are protected.

Blog Post Two: The Akomanga Kaihanga Showcase: Team Island Skittles

On Thursday 23rd July from 5pm - 7pm, you and your team presented to an audience of parents, staff and stakeholders your projects.  If you were away for any of it, you need to talk to members of your team to help you with your blogpost - your blogpost could be interview questions and answers of your team about the showcase (see example at the end).

In your SHOWCASE  blog post, you need to include the following:

Questions

Write your blogpost here!

  • Describe the order of events.  Discuss the speeches and waiata at the start of the evening.  How do you think it went?

  • Describe your part in the presentations.  What did you do? What were the order in presentation?  What did your team members do?

  • What was the atmosphere like (to you)?

  • Do you think the audience understood your message? What feedback did you get on your presentation from the audience?

Reflection

  • What did you do well? What did you team do well?

  • What would you want to do differently next time? Why?

  • Overall, how did you feel about the showcase?  What did you learn from the whole process of planning and presenting about yourself?

  • What capabilities did you learn? Explain your answer.

  • What advice would you give to yourself if you could turn back time to before the planning and presentations.

  • If I’m describing the events I would say in one work was perfect because the speech and the waiata at the start of that evening was very good because we make an effort of it and we make our parents proud and they will always support us no matter what is our decision in our life.

  • In my part of our presentation, I did the speech and I also helped my team. The order in our presentation was Mary was presenting the whole team, David was talking about the challenges that we did, then Leanah and Paikea was doing our planning which is behind the scenes, then Mathew was doing the Outcomes and the last one was me so I’m doing the Reflection and the capabilities that we gained.

  • Atmosphere was like to me as I did my best and I’m doing everything to help my parents.

  • I’m sure that the audience likes/loves our presentation. The feedback that we got for our presentation that was from the audience was good and many more (but I can’t remember some of the feedback).

Reflection

  • While we are presenting our group project we did our best even though we are nervous and we work as a team and that’s the team that went well for all of us.

  • For me what I want to do differently next time is having a music club because I know that every child/children have good voices and they can do more better if they try to do the music club.

  • Overall, I feel that I’m happy and proud because we really did our best, we never give up and if I’m given a chance we would like to do is music club next time because we all have good voice that the others don’t know about.

  • The capabilities that I learned were cooperation because as a team we always need to cooperate with a group and work together.

  • If I’m giving myself advice it would be never give up and if I know what I want, I will achieve it and I will be goal oriented. My other advice is that let’s all fight our problems and always think positive because God has blessings that they always give to us.

Blog Post One: Planning and preparing for Akomanga Kaihanga Showcase: Team Island Skittles

From Monday to part of Thursday, we spent the majority of time in EP6 planning for the showcase.  This is important for you to write about so that we can learn from it and hopefully improve the process next time.

In your PLANNING AND PREPARATION blogpost, you need to include the following:

Questions

Write your blogpost here!

All about the poster!

  • What...was the plan for your poster?  Who came up with plan/layout of the poster and why did they come up with that plan?

  • Did the poster plan/layout change over the course of the planning days?  Why and how?

  • Who was in-charge of the different parts of the poster? Why were they in charge of that part?

  • What were the successes in your planning (name at least one)? (things that went well)

  • What were the challenges in your planning (name at least one)? (things that could have been done better)

  • Reflection:  Before it was sent to be printed, were you happy with your contribution to the poster?  Were you happy with the final poster itself?  Explain your answer.

Video planning and table set-up!

  • What...was the plan for your video and/or table set-up?  Who came up with plan/layout and why did they come up with that plan?

  • Who was in-charge of the different parts of the poster? Why were they in charge of that part?

  • Reflection:  Before it was sent to be printed, were you happy with your contribution to the poster?  Were you happy with the final poster itself?  Explain your answer.

  • The plan for our poster is water safety. Water Safety is something that we work together to teach children know how to swim and they can save themselves from drowning. One of our members suggested it and we chose to do water safety because we want children to know how to swim safely and properly so that they can show their skills in a proper way and to be confident.

  • Yes, because this is for children’s safety and we plan it carefully and we’ve decided that we are doing the posters and some other ideas that we do to make everything work. We also share the pamphlets to tell them what plan we are doing for the children and maybe some of the teenagers don't know how to swim so that’s why we are here to teach them and support them.

  • In our team we had different parts for the poster we had Leanah and she is doing organising meetings, Paikea she’s doing note taker, David he’s doing writing survey and then me I’m doing time keeper, then Mathew is doing Spokesperson and the last one was Mary and she’s doing the Scrum Master. We are in charge of that part so that we can work it done earlier and we work as a team and we battle as one.

  • The success in our planning is that we share ideas, we work as a team, we never give up and all of us do the collaboration and cooperation.

  • The challenges in our planning was that we are challenging ourselves and to get to know more better who we really are and that’s the challenge that we did and to also learn how to swim and how to teach children how to swim.

  • Yes, I’m happy with my contribution because we just did our best as we could and we always think positive. Even though it’s hard to do it we need to have inspiration to finish it on time and our inspiration was our family because they give us strength and love.

Video planning and table set-up!

  • Our plan for the video and the table set-up is just simple because we just all put the pictures in the presentation and the table set-up is just colour blue.

  • Yes, I’m very happy because we are already getting there to help some students learn how to swim and we really did our best. Even though it’s hard but we never give up, we fight as a team and we will finish it also as a team.

My Te Whare Tapa Wha - Hauora

Te Whare Tapa Wha - Hauora

At Tamaki College there are students that are from year 9 to year 13. There are four
dimensions of the English and Maori. They are Taha Tinana (Physical well-being),
Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional well-being), Taha Wairua
(Spiritual well-being), Taha Whanau (Social well-being).

One important part of well-being for me is my family, my family always needs
support for each other that’s why we take care of each other and we are trying
our best to have a beautiful life and have a better future.

Taha Tinana (Physical well-being)

My family always wants to play volleyball and tennis outside
to help improve our social and physical well being. This makes a
positive impact on our lives and that's why me and my family are
always happy together. We are always happy for our lives every
time we play and it helps my body too.

Taha Hinengaro (Mental and Emotional well-being)

Sometimes our family feels that if we have a family problem.
We always talk about it but we can solve it together as one.
That’s why we love each other. We always tell our parents
what our problem is in school. This makes me feel so
happy and special because I know that they are
important to me and I'm important to them too.

Taha Wairua (Spiritual well-being)

Every evening my family always does a rosary for our
safety and for my whole family's safety. Every Christmas
we always celebrate outside and since we came here in
the NZ we just stay at home and try to celebrate it in the
house at least we are complete as a family.

Taha Whanau (Social well-being)

Our family always loves each other no matter what happens.
We always take care of each other and always support each
other. In school our parents always tell us to focus on what we
are doing to achieve our goals or dreams because we want them
to be proud of us and we can have a beautiful life and a better
future for us.

Understanding and learning about Hauora can help students at
schools be educated and prepared for what they are about to
face in life. Learning about Hauora helps the students to achieve
their goals and to finish schools, so that our parents would be
happy for us. School is the best way for the students to help our l
earning and to help our family for everything. I enjoy health
because it can help me and the other students to learn
about Hauora and it can help us for our future.

Island Skittles - Water Safety Project

Hi my name is Cherry Anne, I'm 13 years old, I'm currently studying at Tamaki College and I'm a Year 9 student. We have a project we called "Team Island Skittles." Our group members are Leanah, Paikea, David, Mary and Mathew.

We have five teams Team Renegade, Team DonkCorn, Team Polys, Team Jax and Team Island Skittles. I'm a member of 'Team Island Skittles.' Our team is trying to teach students who do not know how to swim and to avoid drowning. They should know what to do when you are in this kind of situation and it is important to learn this.

In our project planning, we are trying to increase the learning of Year 10 in water safety lessons. I hope that they become smarter when they are surrounded with water. I hope also that when the pool is done in Tamaki College, they will use this to help the students who do not know how to swim. I hope that our project will become successful and they apply it for help.

At this moment, I think my team is doing well to focus on our assigned tasks and to get our work done as soon as we can. We have different tasks for each person, my task is to have a paragraph about 'Water Safety.' When we finish our task on time, I hope that we'll be doing our action by talking to our teacher and staff of our school if they are gonna support our school project for the year. When this project is done, I hope they have a good impact on a child's life.
